  • Effect of soil moisture on the efficacy of foliar-applied wild oat herbicides - Can. J. Plant Sci. 67: 1117-1120 (Oct. 1987) - PDF File - Moisture - In controlled environment experiments, the efficacy of diclofop methyl applied to wild oat was reduced more than the efficacy of difenzoquat or flamprop methyl when the soil water content (SWC) was cycled between -0.24 and -2.18 MPa (low SWC) compared to when it was cycled between -0.03 and -0.06 MPa (high SWC). Similarly, at low SWC diclofop methyl was much less effective than either fluazifop-p-butyl or sethoxydim in reducing the post-treatment dry weight accumulation of the weed.
  • Effect of freezing temperature on the efficacy of wild oat herbicides - Can. J. Plant Sci. 68: 823-827 (July 1988) - PDF File - Frost - In controlled environment experiments diclofop methyl, difenzoquat, flamprop methyl, fluazifop-P and seythoxydim were applied to wild oat at the three-leaf stage at recommended rates 10 h before or after a single night of freezing (-4°C) temperature. Herbicide efficacy, as determined by the change in post-treatment dry weight accumulation of treated wild oats during the ensuing 3 wk period, was unaffected by the freezing temperature. The dry matter accumulation of wild oat exposed to the -4°C temperature was reduced by 10-20% compared to plants which were grown under a constant 15/5°C day/night regime.
  • Growth and Reproductive Potential of Quackgrass from Rhizome Fragments and Seed. - Technical and scientific papers presented at Manitoba Agri-Forum December 1987 pg 153 - PDF File - Quackgrass Growth - Growth of quackgrass (Agropyron repens L.) plants started from single seeds were compared to quackgrass plants started from single-node rhizome fragments. Biomass partitioning and rhizome growth, including node numbers, was reported on. Most growth parameters were similar for both seed and rhizome started plants.
  • Effect of Quackgrass on Yield of Spring Wheat - Technical and scientific papers presented at Manitoba Agri-Forum December 1988 pgs 32-38. - PDF File - Quackgrass Loss Model - Several survey techniques were used to assess yield losses in spring wheat due to quackgrass in farm fields in Manitoba. The surveys enabled both the determination of yield loss and a comparison of the value of several measures of quackgrass infestation for determination of yield loss. The results are also compiled into a predictive model of quackgrass infestation and yield loss in wheat.
  • Yield Probability Distribution Analysis: A Forgotten Tool In The Farm Decision Toolkit? 12/14/2005 - in Proceedings, 6th Annual Manitoba Agronomist's Conference 2005, 14 pgs PDF File - Yield Distributions - This paper examines the issue of using crop-yield distribution information for better on-farm decision making. Yield distribution variables are calculated using Manitoba data and the results demonstrate that Manitoba yield distributions are often negatively skewed. The advantage of recognizing non-normal distributions and not assuming normality is explored. It is also demonstrated how yield distribution variables can easily be calculated using spreadsheet formulas and readily available data.
  • Manitoba Not Yielding To Climate Change? 12/12/2006 - in Proceedings, 7th Annual Manitoba Agronomist's Conference 2006, 10 pgs PDF File - Climate On Yield - Using Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) production insurance data some recent trends in crop yields, yield variability, and losses in Manitoba are presented and discussed in an early climate change context. Manitoba yields have never been higher, nor less variable, than they have been in recent years. MASC loss experience has also not been outside of past ranges. These results suggest that early climate change has not negatively impacted crop yields in Manitoba.
