Dr. Doug Wilcox, P. Ag.
Doug Wilcox is the Manager of Agronomy and Program Development at the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) - formerly known as the Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation, based out of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. He has been employed in the Research Division of MASC since 1990 where he has been the senior manager responsible for program development and agronomy related research. He is also responsible for many of the current extension activities of the Corporation including data distribution, the Management Plus Program web-site (www.mmpp.com), and publication of “Yield Manitoba”.
An “air-force brat”, he was born in Alberta and raised near airbases in Ontario and Manitoba. Living in rural areas and spending many a holiday with relatives involved in farming and farm services tweaked his interest in agriculture. As a result he entered into the agriculture program at the University of Manitoba and completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree in plant breeding in 1982. Some of his early coursework was also completed at McMaster University. His summer job experience includes experience as a field assistant with Manitoba Sugar and in the University of Manitoba horticulture, corn, and barley programs.
He continued his studies in agriculture, pursuing graduate work in weed science. He obtained his Masters and then a Doctorate from the University of Manitoba in 1986 and 1995, respectively. For his Doctorate some of his coursework was completed at the University of British Columbia. During the period of his graduate studies he worked for various agencies including the Canadian International Development Agency in Kenya, the University of Manitoba Plant Science Department and the Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation.
He is also a member of the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists and has been an active member of his community as a 4H leaderand Cub Scout assistant. When not at work he spends his time with his wife and two boys on their acreage near Gainsborough Hall south of Portage la Prairie.
